The brief was to design one studio in a scheme of 60 along the River Clyde.

The driving concept behind my scheme was to create a space that changed according to the artists needs. I placed the ancillary accommodation and entry along one wall which freed up a large and voluminous space for the studio. An enormous sliding plane divides the studio and acts as a vertical canvas, allowing the artist to adapt the space. My manipulating this screen he can alter the buildings transparency, choose between north or south light and use it to create enormous works of art.

The façade of the studio reflects this idea because the sliding plane slots into an exaggerated window enclosure and turns the studio into a giant frame to display art work. If similar buildings were built adjacent, the street would become an external public gallery on a titanic scale!

When the artist is not working the sliding plane can be removed from view. This causes the studio to become transparent, framing a view of the River Clyde from the street, which may otherwise be concealed by walls of the bank-side developments.
